Don’t sabotage your body! 4 golden rules for a successful diet

You already know what to do and what to eat during a diet. But you can easily turn a blind eye on the things you must not do, out of comfort or lack of information. Here are some major and very frequent mistakes people do when keeping a diet.

Don’t eat too little or too rarely. Out of misguided zeal, some people are tempted to not eat at all instead of eating less than what it used to be the normal daily amount of food for them. Going to extremes is not healthy and will definitely not help you improve your body state in the long run. One of the most common effects of this behavior is the yoyo effect. Between 75% and 90% of the people who follow a short, drastic diet tend to regain the weight after the diet ends. Besides the physical aspect, yoyo also has a strong, negative impact on the people’s mind: it causes resentments towards food and can often lead to food disorders such as bulimia, anorexia, obsession with food or lower self esteem.

 Don’t give up on fruits There are diets which recommend the consumption of an extremely low amount of carbohydrates and they usually eliminate fruits from all meals. While it all comes down to the alternatives you find to fruits in your nourishment, such as more green vegetables or vitamin pills, fruits are actually beneficial when trying to loose weight. They offer the body a high contribution of vitamins, minerals and fibers, and a very low amount of fats. Eating fruits between the main meals helps you get rid of the “empty stomach” sensation and makes you eat less at the main meal.

Tip: You can replace the regular breakfast with a fruit meal. Fruit help your digestion and also fill your stomach, offer your body energy and fight constipation. If you get bored of eating a single type of fruit every morning, you can prepare a fruit salad, which is both healthy and delicious.

 Don’t count the calories The insulin level in your body, not the calories, affect your metabolic rate (the pace your body burns the fats). A balanced diet and frequent meals (main meals and snacks) will keep the insulin at a constant level.

 Don’t neglect physical activity It is well known that a diet works wonders when combined with sport. Many people quit doing physical activity because the results aren’t fast and striking. As you work your muscles, they will increase their volume (muscular mass) and weight, while replacing the fat tissue. This is why, during the first weeks of practicing sports, there will be no obvious change in your weight. You must remember that changing your body shape and your metabolism is a slow process, but the results are worth striving for.
